There is something so special about photographing seniors outdoors, especially when the location gives you a little bit of everything. Cuyahoga Valley National Park senior photos are perfect for creating natural, timeless portraits with a mix of wildflowers, rolling hills, tall grasses, and beautiful golden-hour light.
For Allison’s Class of 2027 senior session, we headed to Kendall Hills in Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Northeast Ohio. She was looking for a location with wildflowers, and I knew Kendall Hills would give us exactly that—plus open grassy hills, trails, and plenty of opportunities for the warm, glowing light I love to photograph.
The evening ended up being everything I could have hoped for. From the beautiful landscape to the soft sunlight peeking through the trees, Allison’s Cuyahoga Valley National Park senior photos came together with a natural, joyful, and slightly editorial feel.

When Allison was looking for a location for her senior pictures, she wanted flowers. Instead of choosing a traditional flower field, I suggested Kendall Hills because of the variety it offers.
At the bottom of the hills, several trails come together, creating a beautiful starting point with wildflowers and greenery surrounding the area. From there, we could move toward the open grassy hills for a completely different look.
One of my favorite things about photographing at Cuyahoga Valley National Park is that you don’t always have to travel far to create variety. We didn’t spend the entire hour hiking from one location to another. Instead, we took our time and worked with the areas around us.
There was a short, somewhat steep incline to reach the main hills, but overall, it was an easy location to navigate during the session.
And thankfully, everything went perfectly.

We started Allison’s session around 7:00 p.m. on a clear evening, just before golden hour.
This is one of my favorite times to photograph outdoors.
I love looking for places where the sun can peek through the trees behind my subject. When you position someone just right, the sunlight creates this beautiful glow around their hair and body while keeping the light on their face soft and flattering.
That was exactly what we had that evening.
The sun was beginning to filter through the trees, creating a gorgeous backlight throughout the session. Between the warm light, green hills, and wildflowers, Allison looked absolutely beautiful.
Honestly, I felt like I could have photographed her anywhere and gotten a beautiful image—but the landscape and light made everything feel even more special.

Allison brought two outfits for her senior pictures, giving the session two completely different looks.
Her first outfit was a beautiful pink flowy dress with ribbon straps. The soft pink looked gorgeous against the greenery and wildflowers and gave the first part of the session a romantic, feminine feel.
For her second outfit, she changed into jeans and a navy blue top, creating a more casual and relaxed look.
I love when seniors bring multiple outfits because it gives their final gallery more variety without needing to completely change the location.
A dress can create movement and a more editorial feel, while jeans and a simple top can make the photos feel a little more like everyday life.
Both felt like they belonged in the setting.
One thing I’ve been intentionally incorporating more into my senior sessions is a mix of editorial posing and guided movement.
I don’t expect my seniors to show up already knowing how to pose—and honestly, I don’t think they should have to.
We started Allison’s session with some simple standing poses. I had her turn slightly, make small changes with her hands, shift her weight, and adjust her angles.
From there, we could build on each pose.
This is something I think is important for both photographers and seniors to remember: you don’t need a brand-new pose every few seconds.
Start with something that works and play with it.
Those small adjustments can turn one basic pose into an entire collection of different images.
And if you’re a senior who has been saving photos on Pinterest, TikTok, or Instagram, bring your inspiration with you! I actually encourage it. You don’t have to recreate every image exactly, but having examples of poses, outfits, or overall styles you love can give us ideas to try during your session.

One of my favorite images from Allison’s entire session is one where she is tucked into a flower-covered bush, with the blooms surrounding her.
Rather than simply placing her in front of the flowers, we used them to become part of the photograph.
I love doing this with outdoor senior portraits.
The landscape doesn’t have to be just a background. It can actually help create the composition.
Flowers can frame your face.
Tall grass can add texture in the foreground.
Trees can create beautiful backlighting.
Open hills can add depth to the image.
And movement can make the final photographs feel less like traditional portraits and more like a moment captured.
That is the direction I’ve been loving more and more in my own work—natural portraits with an editorial influence.
If you’re considering Cuyahoga Valley National Park for your senior pictures, there are a few things I’d keep in mind.
And most importantly, don’t worry about being perfect.
Your senior session should feel like you.
Looking back at Allison’s session, I think the three words I’d use to describe it are natural, joyful, and glowing.
From the pink dress and wildflowers to the rolling hills and sunlight filtering through the trees, everything came together so naturally.
But what I love most is that the photographs don’t feel like they are only about the location.
They’re about Allison being in this season of her life.
Her senior year.
Her personality.
The little things she brought with her.
The way she moved through the landscape.
And all the excitement that comes with being so close to the next chapter.
That’s what I want senior photography to capture.
Not just what you looked like during your senior year, but how this season felt.
