The best times to book engagement photos in Northeast Ohio are based on the season you choose. Our scenery changes dramatically throughout the year, and that means the look and feel of your engagement photos can change just as much.
From spring blooms and fresh greenery to warm summer evenings, colorful fall foliage, and quiet winter landscapes, there isn’t necessarily one “best” season for engagement photos. Instead, the best time depends on the type of scenery, lighting, and overall feeling you want your photos to have.
Spring is when Northeast Ohio starts coming back to life. Trees begin filling in, flowers start blooming, and everything takes on that fresh green look that photographs beautifully.
The best times to book engagement photos for couples who want soft greenery, blooming flowers, and a romantic feel, would be spring. Locations throughout the Cleveland-Akron area begin to feel especially lush, while places like gardens and parks can offer colorful seasonal backdrops.

Spring weather can be unpredictable, though, so flexibility to book engagement photos is important. Depending on the month, you may get anything from chilly temperatures to a warm, sunny evening — and sometimes all of it in the same week.
Summer is one of the most popular times to book engagement photos in Northeast Ohio, and for good reason. The trees are full, the landscapes are green, and the longer days give us more flexibility when planning around sunset.
This is also a great season to book engagement photos for couples who want to incorporate Lake Erie, downtown Cleveland, or an outdoor adventure into their session. Waterfront locations can provide beautiful blue tones, while lush parks and nature preserves create a completely different look.

Summer evenings can also give us some of the prettiest golden-hour light of the year. The key is planning around the heat and choosing locations where we can take advantage of shade when needed.
If you picture your engagement photos surrounded by colorful trees, fall is probably the season book engagement photos.
Northeast Ohio’s fall foliage can create an incredible backdrop, with shades of gold, orange, red, and deep green throughout parks, trails, and wooded locations. This makes fall one of the most sought-after seasons for engagement sessions.
The exact timing of peak foliage varies from year to year, but October is typically a popular month for couples wanting that classic Northeast Ohio fall look.

Because fall is so popular, dates and prime sunset times can fill quickly. If colorful foliage is a major priority for your session, it’s worth planning ahead and book engagement photos early.
Winter doesn’t have to mean skipping outdoor engagement photos. In fact, it can create one of the most unique looks of the year.
Bare trees, soft winter light, snow-covered landscapes, and quieter locations can create photos that feel minimal, romantic, and editorial. Winter can also be a great opportunity to move away from the typical greenery-heavy engagement session.

For couples who want something more fashion-forward, architectural locations around Cleveland can work especially well during the winter months. Think clean lines, historic buildings, city streets, and elegant architecture rather than relying entirely on nature.
One of the things I love about photographing couples in Northeast Ohio is that we aren’t limited to one type of scenery. Within a relatively short drive, we can find wooded trails, gardens, Lake Erie waterfronts, historic architecture, downtown city streets, and open fields.
That means your engagement session doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s.
Instead of choosing a date first and figuring out the location later, I recommend thinking about the overall look and feeling you want your photos to have. From there, we can choose a season, location, and time of day that work together when you book engagement photos.
Whether you’re drawn to colorful fall trees, soft summer sunsets, fresh spring greenery, or a clean winter editorial look, there is a season in Northeast Ohio that can bring your vision to life.
Choosing the right time of day can completely change the look and feel of your engagement photos. The same location can look bright and harsh in the middle of the afternoon and soft, romantic, and dimensional just a few hours later.
While I can photograph couples throughout the day, I typically recommend planning outdoor engagement sessions around the softer light of early morning or late afternoon/evening. When the sun is lower in the sky, the light tends to be less harsh and creates more depth and dimension in photographs.
Golden hour is the period of softer, warmer light around sunrise or sunset. It gets its name from the golden glow created when sunlight travels through the atmosphere at a lower angle.
When I book engagement photos, I especially love the hour leading up to sunset. The light becomes softer as we get closer to the horizon, which can create that warm, glowing look many couples envision for their photos.
Golden hour doesn’t mean we simply stand around waiting for the sun to set, either. I use that changing light throughout the session—from brighter, natural light earlier on to softer backlighting and warmer tones toward the end.
The exact timing changes throughout the year because sunset occurs much earlier in the winter than it does during the summer. Instead of choosing the same clock time year-round, I plan sessions around sunset and the location we’re photographing at.
As an example, a session might look something like:
Morning session
8:00–9:00 AM — Soft morning light, cooler temperatures, and quieter locations.
Afternoon session
2:00–3:00 PM — Brighter light with more defined shadows. This can work especially well for architecture, downtown locations, or locations with plenty of shade.
Late afternoon/evening session
5:00–6:30 PM — Softer light as we get closer to sunset, transitioning into golden hour.
Summer sunset session
6:30–8:30 PM — Longer summer evenings allow us to start later and take advantage of extended golden-hour light.
These are only examples—the actual start time will depend on the date, sunset time, location, and weather.
Not at all.
One of my favorite misconceptions about booking engagement photos is that we need a perfectly sunny day. While clear skies can create beautiful golden light, cloudy and overcast days can create incredibly soft, flattering light as well.
Clouds act like a natural diffuser, reducing harsh shadows and creating more even light across your faces. Overcast skies can also give photos a softer, more editorial feeling.
And sometimes, the weather can actually add something special to the images. Dramatic clouds, fog, light snow, or the atmosphere immediately after a rainstorm can create texture and depth that you simply don’t get on a perfectly clear day.
Northeast Ohio weather can be unpredictable, so I always keep the forecast in mind when planning a session. A cloudy morning can turn into a sunny afternoon, or a forecast that looks questionable several days out can completely change by the time your session arrives.
If the weather isn’t ideal, that doesn’t automatically mean we need to reschedule. Light rain, cloud cover, and changing skies can sometimes make for beautiful photographs.

If we’re dealing with unsafe conditions, heavy rain, severe storms, or temperatures that would make the experience genuinely uncomfortable, we’ll make a plan together to reschedule.
My goal isn’t simply to wait for a “perfect” weather forecast. It’s to look at the light, location, season, and overall conditions and determine what will create the best experience and photographs for you.
Golden hour is a great starting point, but it isn’t a hard rule.
If you want romantic, glowy, and warm, I may recommend an evening session around sunset. If you prefer something cleaner, brighter, and more editorial, an earlier session or architectural location may be a better fit.
That’s why I don’t just give every couple the same session time. Your location, outfits, season, and the feeling you want your images to have all play a role in determining when we should shoot.
The goal is to choose a time that makes your location and your vision work together—not simply to chase the clock.
Once you’ve chosen a season and general time of day, the next piece is finding a location that fits you as a couple.
Northeast Ohio has so much variety when it comes to engagement photos. You can have a session surrounded by trees and open fields one weekend and then create something completely different in downtown Cleveland the next. The best location isn’t necessarily the most popular one—it’s the one that complements your style, outfits, season, and the kind of images you want to have.
Here are a few types of locations I love to book engagement photos throughout the Cleveland-Akron area:
Cuyahoga Valley National Park
For couples who love the outdoors, CVNP offers wooded trails, open fields, rolling hills, and beautiful natural scenery. It’s especially beautiful in spring, summer, and fall when the landscape is full of color and texture.
Wade Oval & Cleveland Museum of Art
One of my favorite options for couples wanting something a little more editorial and elevated without giving up greenery. The architecture around the Cleveland Museum of Art provides clean lines and a timeless backdrop, while Wade Oval adds trees and open space nearby.
Downtown Cleveland
Perfect for couples who want their engagement photos to feel more fashion-forward, urban, and editorial. Historic buildings, city streets, architectural details, and the energy of downtown can create a completely different look from a traditional park session.
Lake Erie & Cleveland Waterfront
For couples who love water, sunsets, and a more relaxed feel, the Lake Erie shoreline can be beautiful. Waterfront locations can also bring cooler blue tones into your images and pair especially well with elegant or neutral outfits.
Kingwood Center Gardens
A great choice for couples who want a more romantic garden setting. The combination of manicured gardens, historic architecture, and greenery can create an elegant and timeless look.
Brecksville Reservation
A beautiful option for couples who want a natural setting without traveling far from the Cleveland-Akron area. Wooded areas, trails, and seasonal foliage make it especially versatile.

A location that looks incredible in October might have a completely different feel in January.
Spring: Look for flowering trees, fresh greenery, gardens, and soft natural landscapes.
Summer: Take advantage of lush greenery, open fields, waterfront locations, and long evenings.
Fall: Wooded locations become especially popular for colorful foliage. Areas with a variety of trees can give us more color and texture throughout the session.
Winter: Consider locations with interesting architecture, clean backgrounds, historic buildings, or open landscapes. Winter can be a great time to lean into a more minimal and editorial look rather than relying on greenery.
This is one reason I recommend choosing your location based on the season you’re actually photographing in, rather than simply picking a location because you’ve seen someone else’s photos there.
Before choosing a location, think about how you want your engagement photos to feel.
Romantic + natural
Think wooded trails, gardens, open fields, and soft evening light.
Classic + timeless
Historic architecture, elegant buildings, manicured gardens, and clean backgrounds work beautifully.
Editorial + fashion-forward
Downtown Cleveland, architectural spaces, modern buildings, and locations with strong lines allow us to create something more intentional and magazine-inspired.
Adventurous + laid-back
Choose a location where you can actually move around and explore together. Trails, overlooks, beaches, and open landscapes can make the session feel less like a traditional photoshoot and more like an experience.
Sentimental + personal
Sometimes the best location isn’t a popular photography spot at all. Your favorite coffee shop, the neighborhood where you met, your family property, a meaningful vacation spot, or somewhere connected to your relationship can make your images feel much more personal.
Your outfits and location should work together.
For example, a formal dress and suit can look incredible against historic Cleveland architecture, while more relaxed outfits may feel natural in a wooded or waterfront setting.
If you’re envisioning a luxury editorial look, I usually recommend choosing a location with clean backgrounds, interesting architecture, and room to create intentional compositions. If you’re looking for something more candid and relaxed, a location with movement and natural surroundings may be a better fit.
And don’t be afraid to dress up.
Your engagement session doesn’t have to look like an everyday Saturday. An elevated outfit, a beautiful location, and intentional lighting can create images that feel timeless while still feeling like you.
One of my favorite ways to approach an engagement session is to combine different environments within the same location or nearby areas.
We might start with clean architectural portraits, move into a tree-lined area for something softer and more natural, and finish with golden-hour portraits as the light changes.
This gives your gallery variety without making it feel disconnected.
Ultimately, choosing your engagement location isn’t about finding the “best” spot in Northeast Ohio. It’s about finding a place that gives us the right combination of light, scenery, architecture, season, and personality to create photographs that actually feel like your relationship.
Once you’ve chosen your season, time of day, and location, a little preparation can make a huge difference in how your engagement session feels. The goal isn’t to show up perfectly posed or know exactly what to do in front of the camera. That’s my job. Your job is to show up ready to enjoy the experience together.
Try not to schedule your engagement session immediately after another commitment. Give yourself enough time to get ready without feeling rushed, especially if you’re having your hair or makeup professionally done.
I recommend arriving at your location with a few minutes to spare. This gives you time to grab anything you brought, make any last-minute outfit adjustments, and settle in before we start.
Your outfits can have a huge impact on the overall look of your photos. I recommend choosing clothing that feels like an elevated version of you, rather than something you wouldn’t normally feel comfortable wearing.
A few things to consider:
And if you’re unsure, ask me. I’m happy to help you decide between outfits or make sure everything works with the location we’ve chosen.
You don’t need to bring a suitcase full of props. In most cases, keeping things simple creates the most timeless images.
Depending on your session, you may want to bring:
If you have access to something unique that is meaningful to you as a couple—such as a vintage car, boat, horses, a private property, or another special location—let me know. Those personal details can turn a beautiful session into something that feels completely your own.
Before your session, tell me what you’re drawn to.
If you’ve saved engagement photos on Pinterest or Instagram that you love, send them my way. They don’t have to be photographs you want copied. They can simply help me understand what you’re drawn to—whether that’s soft movement, editorial posing, candid moments, dramatic lighting, architecture, or a certain color palette.
I also want to know what you don’t like.
Maybe you don’t want overly posed photos.
Maybe you love editorial portraits but still want plenty of candid moments.
Maybe you’re uncomfortable with PDA in front of the camera. All of that is helpful for me to know beforehand.
You do not need modeling experience to have beautiful engagement photos.
I’ll guide you throughout the session with natural direction and intentional posing when it’s needed, while also giving you space to interact naturally with each other.
Rather than putting you into the exact same poses over and over, I’ll look at the light, location, outfits, and the way you naturally interact and build from there.
Some images may feel more editorial and intentional, while others are simply the two of you laughing, walking, talking, or enjoying the moment.
It’s completely normal to feel nervous before your engagement session. Most couples aren’t used to having a camera pointed at them for an hour—and you don’t need to be.
You don’t have to perform for the camera or manufacture every candid moment.
Trust the process, trust your photographer, and focus on each other.
The more comfortable you become, the more naturally your personalities and relationship will come through in your photographs.
Your engagement session should feel like more than checking “photos” off your wedding to-do list. It should be an experience you actually enjoy—and the photographs should preserve that feeling.
There isn’t one perfect season, location, or time of day for engagement photos. The best session is one that feels intentional to you—from the location and outfits to the light and little details that make your relationship unique.
Whether you’re dreaming of colorful fall foliage, a summer evening by Lake Erie, fresh spring greenery, or a more elevated editorial session in downtown Cleveland, Northeast Ohio gives us so many ways to create something beautiful.
My job is to take all of those pieces and help you turn them into a session that feels natural, elevated, and completely yours. We’ll choose a location that fits your vision, plan around the best light, and create a mix of guided portraits and genuine moments so you never feel like you’re simply standing in front of a camera wondering what to do.
Your engagement photos should feel like you—not like a copy of someone else’s session.
If you’re ready to start planning, I’d love to hear what you’re envisioning and help you find the right season, location, and experience for your photos.
